Augusta Exchange Club 2002 Community Service Award
On Thursday, October 24, 2002, The Augusta Exchange Club presented its Community Service Award to Atticus Jerome (Jack) Connell. This award is presented to people in the community who have dedicated their lives to the betterment of their community. Jack Connell was just such an individual. Jack was born on September 9, 1919 in Augusta, Georgia. He attended Richmond Academy, Augusta College and North Georgia College. Jack joined the Army Air Corps in 1941 and flew 79 bombing missions during WWII and was discharged in 1946 as a Captain. He has been a businessman in Augusta since 1946. Jack served on the Augusta City Council from 1959 to 1965. He was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1969 and carried the Majority whip from 1973 to 1976. He was appointed Speaker Pro tem in 1977 and still serves in that capacity. This is the longest term in this position both in Georgia and the United States. Jack loves Augusta and has had a tremendous impact on its growth and prosperity. Jack was a major factor in the following community projects: MCG Children’s Medical Center, Bringing Augusta College to a full Four Year College and later University, Georgia Golf Hall of Fame, National Science Center, Hope Scholarship Fund, Foster Grandparent Program, Riverwatch Parkway, Murray Road expansion, and the Augusta – Savannah Parkway. Jack has truly been an outstanding public servant, far beyond that which is required of any ordinary citizen or elected official. In deed, it is a great pleasure that the Exchange Club of Augusta presents Jack Connell the 2002 Community Service Award.
